How Does PRP Work?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been used widely in orthopedics as a biological treatment for various musculoskeletal injuries involving tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bone. It has seen use by many prominent athletes like Tiger Woods and Rafael Nadal because of its rich concentration of growth factors and cytokines that have been shown to initiate and promote healing by stimulating cell migration, proliferation, angiogenesis (blood vessel formation), and matrix synthesis. Growth factors contained within PRP include:

• Platelet-derived growth factor
• Transforming growth factor
• Vascular endothelial growth factor
• Epidermal growth Factor
• Insulin-like growth factor
• Fibroblast growth factor.

The body’s first response to injury is to deliver a rush of platelets to the site in order to start the healing process. Studies have shown that PRP has around 578 different types of proteins including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ). These proteins and growth factors can stimulate stem cells and improve cellular proliferation, differentiation, and regeneration, hence, leading to skin rejuvenation and hyaluronic acid production.

A similar process occurs when PRP is used in conjunction with Microneedling or injected as a dermal filler. With the ability to reduce scarring, facilitate hair growth, minimize wrinkles, sun damage, and dark circles, PRP is an anti-aging solution that everyone can benefit from.

This minimally invasive, no downtime technique can be performed in as little as a lunch hour with results lasting up to two years! Mild bruising, redness, and swelling is common post-injection and resolves within 1-4 days.

The PRP process begins with a small blood draw. Once drawn, a centrifuge is utilized to spin and separate the components of your blood. It can then be injected into the face, injected into the scalp to remedy hair loss, or used topically as part of the Midnight Sun Facial (see below).

The wonderful thing about PRP is that it’s completely organic because it weaponizes your body’s own defenses against the inevitable signs of aging!

What Can PRP Treat?

MIDNIGHT SUN FACIAL (PRP + Microneedling):

Popularly known as the “Vampire Facial”, the Midnight Sun Facial is an advanced skincare procedure which combines medical microneedling with the application of a patient’s own platelet rich plasma (PRP) to encourage cell turnover. The high concentration of growth factors in PRP lead to increased production of collagen and elastin. Skin will look fuller, tighter, and smoother. This treatment is applicable anywhere you have skin!

MIDNIGHT SUN FACELIFT (PRP Injectable):

In addition to its use in the Midnight Sun Facial, PRP can also be used instead of the Juvederm collection of fillers for those wanting a completely natural remedy. This “natural filler” stimulates local cell renewal, production of collagen, and stimulates the production of natural hyaluronic acid which smooths out wrinkles and tightens the skin for a more youthful complexion.

PRP FOR HAIR RESTORATION

This therapy for hair loss works through the growth factors that encourage the growth of dormant hair follicles, much like how it encourages wound healing and production of collagen for acne scars, dark spots, and other cosmetic concerns for all skin types. Growth factors mediate the beneficial effects of PRP injections in the hair by inducing and maintaining the anagen (growth) phase.

PRP WELLNESS INJECTIONS

In addition to treating hair loss and skin rejuvenation, PRP can also be used to treat:

1. Arthritis
2. Tendonitis
3. Muscle Strains
4. Ligament Strains

At Minnie Street Aesthetics we utilize ultrasound technology to place the PRP precisely where it needs to go. This technique not only increases the effectiveness of the treatment, but it also minimizes discomfort during the procedure. Additionally, lidocaine (a local anesthetic) is mixed with your PRP so that after the initial poke, the primary feeling is that of pressure as it’s being injected. As with other procedures, a strict sterile technique is utilized to prevent infection.

Results

MIDNIGHT SUN FACIAL

We recommend that you begin with 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The number of treatments required will depend on how each individual responds to the treatments, and the extent of the imperfections prior to treatment. Microneedling can be used on all skin parts of the body (neck, décolleté, arms, legs, etc). Although most people will begin to see results after their very first appointment, results are cumulative with more treatments. The outcomes are normally maintained for 18 to 24 months. Typically, 1 to 2 touch-up treatments each year are needed to maintain the results.

MIDNIGHT SUN FACELIFT

PRP stimulates collagen production and tissue regeneration, and therefore the results are seen gradually. Unlike fillers which provide instant results, PRP usually continues to improve for weeks and months following treatment. One major benefit of PRP as a cosmetic filler is its ability to help your skin heal and rejuvenate faster, without the risk of an allergic reaction or skin sensitivity. It also provides results for a longer period of time.

PRP FOR HAIR RESTORATION

An improvement in hair texture may be seen as early as 2 weeks after the procedure, but hair growth isn’t normally appreciated until 3 to 6 months after the initial treatment. For optimum results, 3 to 5 treatment sessions administered 4 weeks apart are recommended, with maintenance treatments repeated 1 to 2 years after the initial session.

The results provided by platelet-rich plasma injections are effective and safe, but they aren’t permanent since only superficial cells are targeted. Additionally, PRP treatments can only encourage hair growth so much, as hair loss is genetically predisposed.
