What are PDO Threads?

Polydioxanone (PDO) threads have been safely used in all types of surgery for almost 40 years, and they are now being used in new, non-surgical ways to tighten and lift sagging tissues. Specifically, a PDO thread is a synthetic, absorbable monofilament that takes 4-6 months to be completely absorbed by the body. During the absorption process, the threads will help stimulate new collagen and elastin in your skin. Collagen and elastin are the “scaffolding” that provide the support and structure under your skin to combat sagging and fine lines. Both collagen and elastin decrease in density as we age. Collagen fibers create the infrastructure for elastin and hyaluronic acid, which are responsible for the skin’s elasticity and hydration respectively. As you age, your body starts producing less collagen. The skin becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic which leads to wrinkle formation. By stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, PDO threads can reverse the aging process. There are two type of PDO threads; PDO Lifting Threads and PDO Smooth Threads.

How Do LIFTING PDO Threads Work?

Lifting Threads have barbs along the thread that are intended to grab and reposition the overlying skin. These threads are placed in the subcutaneous layer then pulled so that both the fatty layer and the skin look slightly lifted. The lifting effect can be seen immediately and the threads will also stimulate the body to generate new collagen over time. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. A long tunnel under the skin is made so that the thread has a wide grip and holds longer. The entire path of the tunnel is anesthetized with lidocaine for maximum patient comfort. After the site is anesthetized, you will only feel pulling of the tissues and the click of the threads being activated. The procedure takes 45 to 60 minutes.

After Your Appointment

There are not a lot of special after-care requirements to this treatment. However, you should hold off on any dental treatments for two weeks after your mid face PDO Thread Lift. Holding your mouth open for an excessive period of time can affect the results of your treatment. You’ll also want to try and sleep on your back for the first couple of weeks to avoid putting too much pressure on one side of your face.

Results

How long the threads last depend on a number of factors, including the thickness of the threads and your body’s rate of metabolism. However, most of our patient’s find that the threads have dissolved within six to nine months. Some of the results of the treatment, such as the skin lifting and some of the contouring effects are visible immediately after treatment. However, the final results of your PDO thread lift will be seen within one to two months of your treatment once the threads have stimulated your body to produce more collagen. Most of our patients enjoy satisfactory results after just one treatment. A follow up appointment will be scheduled 6-9 months after your first treatment to see if any additional treatments are needed. After that, you shouldn’t need anther treatment for three years.
