About us
Teaching Methods
At Fast Lane Swim Lessons we understand that everybody is an individual and each person has different goals as well as different personalities and learning types. What works for one person may not work for another…
What sets us apart from many other swim instruction programs is that there is not a step-by-step level up curriculum in place. So you will not hear us talking about jellyfish, starfish, tadpoles, or sharks, etc… Nor is there any type of graduation or pass/fail methodology.
Of course, the goal is always to progress with each lesson, and so I have laid out just a few simple benchmarks as far as swimming ability achieved that can serve as indicators of success and progression into a potential reevaluation of ability and goals.
Getting started…
-Being able to safely get into and out of the water, blow bubbles, submerge voluntarily, willing to float/glide with assistance.
Next…
-Voluntarily and unassisted jumping into water deeper than height of swimmer, rolling to back float and using arms and legs to move through the water for an entire length of a pool (25yds).
-Pushing from wall or steps with face in the water and kicking for more than 2 body lengths, then being able to roll to a back float and remain on back unassisted.
-Treading water for at least 10 seconds unassisted, then getting to a back float.
Moving on…
-Progression into learning the basics of actual strokes. Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke, and starting Butterfly technique. Ideally, depending on the individuals age and personal goals, the swimmer will be able to complete at least 25 yds of Freestyle, Breaststroke, and Backstroke, and be able to kick with proper technique and rhythm for butterfly.
-Being able to tread water for at least 2 minutes.
After that…
The next steps depend on what is determined to be the pursuit for each student. Anywhere from stroke refinement for swim team, getting ocean ready for a big vacation, swimming for fitness, or even training for a triathlon. Once one can tread water with ease, and swim proper strokes continuously, the opportunities to grow as a swimmer become much more plentiful.
You can also always just keep coming to swim lessons because it is fun and enriching and is a physical way to conquer fears and build self confidence.
No matter where you are at in your swimming journey, just remember,
“Swim Like You Mean It!”
Using an individualized approach based on each students’ specific needs, we teach water safety skills, improve swimming ability, and ensure that experiences in the pool are fun and enriching for kids of all ages in Boulder and Weld County, Colorado!
What Others Are Saying
After a year hiatus from water & swimming, we were referred to Lane Martin by another private swim instructor based upon my child’s specific needs. He has been taking private lessons with Lane since the summer of 2013. Right from the start, we found Lane to be a very qualified swim instructor & very patient. He possesses unique coaching skills which, to our surprise, has transformed my son’s significant fear of water into a desire for swimming in deep water! We are very thankful that my son’s increased self confidence and pride was nurtured by Lane. My son can’t wait to go to swim classes now – he even asked to double his swim lessons per week!”
